thereupon wanimously asked me to refer the question to you and

when no answer was received they agreed to pass the legislation

without raising this contentious point.

At the request of the Member who wished to

move the amendment to which I have referred I enquired of the

Government of the Straits Settlements whether the revenue devoted

to the payment of their annual war contribution of £200,000 was exempt from Military Contribution and I was informed that it is.

Of this fact the Unofficial Member was apprised.

I have now received your telegram informing

me that the revenue devoted to payment of Interest and Sinking

Fund may be deducted from the revenue assessable for Military

Contribution.
